“My wife and I recently built a new house in Georgetown, SC. We wanted to have a whole house generator installed because we tend to lose power when we have bad storms in the fall. We didn’t know if we would have enough money left in our budget though. I had done some research on generators and had read good reports on Kohler generators. I contacted Continental Engines, who are the local Kohler platinum sales and service dealers for home generators. They advised me to go ahead and have the automatic transfer switch installed while the house was being wired. That way it would be very easy to install the generator whenever we were ready to move forward with it. Continental calculated the load that we would have in our new house. They recommended using a 14 KW generator. I had thought that we would need the 20 KW unit but they assured me that the 14 KW unit would handle our whole house. We purchased a 200 Amp Kohler automatic transfer switch from them and had our electrician install it when he was wiring the house. Continental also told me to make sure our natural gas company installed a 2 PSI regulator for the generator when they installed our natural gas service.

After the house was completed, it turned out that we had enough money left to purchase the generator and have it installed. I called Continental Engines and told them that we were ready to proceed with the purchase and installation of the generator. They had the generator that we needed in stock. A few days later their crew came to our house for the installation. They set the generator on a heavy-duty concrete base. It took them the better part of a day to make the natural gas and electrical connections. The two technicians that did the installation were very knowledgeable and worked very efficiently. Their work was very neat and professional looking. After getting everything connected, they cranked up the generator and activated the transfer switch so that the generator was powering our house. Then they had me go inside and start adding load to the generator. They monitored the load with an ammeter on the generator output. I turned on both air conditioning units and our electric oven in the kitchen which are our biggest electric loads. We have a natural gas water heater and our cooktop is also natural gas so they are not part of the electric load. All of the lights in the house are LED, so they don’t add much load. The generator performed flawlessly and we had additional capacity to spare even with the two HVAC units and the oven on. The generator was not as loud as I thought it would be.

They programmed our generator to automatically start up and run for 20 minutes every week on Friday at 12:00 noon to exercise it. Every Friday it starts up and runs. I receive a notification on my phone telling me when it starts up and when it shuts down.

We have had one power outage since our generator was installed. When the power went out, our generator started up and switched over. It was amazing how quickly that happened! Everything worked fine while the generator was powering the house. The utility power was restored in about an hour. The generator shut down and switched the house back over to utility power. It all worked very well!

We are very happy with the advice and service that we have received from Continental Engines. I highly recommend them for your home generator purchase and installation.”
